Elevated Blind vs Ground Blind Hunting?

Texas is world-renowned for its impressive whitetail deer, and Stone Creek Ranch is the premier destination for Texas whitetail hunts. Few experiences in hunting are as thrilling as drawing down on a world-class, trophy whitetail buck.

When hunting Texas whitetail deer, you have several choices to make such as: destination, rifle or bow, and ground blind versus an elevated hunting blind. No matter what questions you may have, we’re here to answer them. For now, here are some things to consider when choosing a hunting blind.

Ground Blind Hunting vs an Elevated Hunting Blind

There are plenty of ways to hunt Whitetail Deer. In fact, there are so many tips and tricks out there that it’s hard to know which ones to follow! While we do have many box blinds throughout the property, you may choose to hunt from the ground. Besides personal preference, it may be better to shoot from the ground than from an elevated position in certain circumstances.

Hunting deer from the ground isn’t a new concept; Native Americans have been doing it successfully for centuries. In fact, there are actually four possible positions, not two. When you are hunting, there may be situations when all four different shooting positions are needed. These positions are prone (lying down), kneeling, sitting, or standing. When choosing your ideal position consider these factors:

  • The prone position is the most accurate of the four. However, the low angle may limit your view of the target if there is tall grass or brush in-between.

  • With no support other than muscle strength, standing is the most difficult position for accurate shooting. It is the least effective for long distances and should only be used for short-range shots.

  • Most often, the visibility of the target will determine which position you adopt. That is why we recommend you practice shooting from each of these positions.

Hilly woods or areas with many ditches and creeks are best for ground hunting. You want to remain out of sight and out of smell! No matter which hunting stance you choose, make sure to position yourself so that the wind is moving in a favorable direction.
