Is it Expensive to Start Hunting?
You’ve been interested in hunting for a while now. There’s many health benefits to hunting, both physical and mental. Plus, it looks like a fun and relaxing way to spend the day. You want all of the benefits of a great day of hunting, but there’s one problem. You need to start hunting in Dallas and you really don’t know how to do so. We’re here to help!
While we will do our best to give you a quick answer, there isn’t a simple answer to that question unfortunately. We will break down the numbers as best as possible, though, starting with the bare basics you’ll need to begin.
The good news is that you can actually start hunting for pretty cheap in terms of the absolute bare minimum. The quickest and cheapest way to get started hunting is with a weapon and a license and/or tag. In Texas, you do need a valid TPWD license. Some states also require you to wear a blaze orange vest and hat. Texas is one of them. This is referred to as Texas Blaze Orange Laws. It states that all persons on public hunting lands (state, national forests, and grasslands) during daylight hours when hunting with firearms is permitted must wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange material with orange headgear, and at least 144 square inches appearing on both chest and back. Places like Amazon or Walmart sell this combo for around $10, so this isn’t a big added expense.
The most expensive portion of hunting will be the gun itself. Most guns are a few hundred dollars. Some specialty and high-capacity guns can be significantly more costly than this, but as a beginner you don’t really need something so fancy. A simple rifle will do just fine for you!
The above scenario is with absolute bare essentials. For a more enjoyable and possible higher chance of success, it’s going to take a bit more than that. We recommend some sort of camo hunting gear. You’re not going to go out there in blue jeans and a t-shirt, right? The deer will spot you from a mile away! If you are just looking to try out the sport of hunting, we highly suggest finding someone that is willing to let you borrow camo gear for your first time.
