Do I Need a License to Hunt at Stone Creek Ranch?
Planning a trip to one of Texas’ many hunting ranches is exciting, and like with any other trip, you have a lot of plans to make beforehand. You need to pack all of your gear, and if you have a favorite rifle or bow, you’ll certainly be bringing that along, too, plus the appropriate ammunition.
But while you’re packing your gear and making sure everything is taken care of at home while you’re gone, don’t forget to get a Texas hunting license. It would be a shame to arrive for a hunting trip you’ve been looking forward to and have it spoiled because you don’t have the right license, after all.
Texas Hunting License Rules
To hunt in Texas, all resident and out-of-state hunters must have a valid Texas hunting license. This rule applies to hunters using both private and public hunting land, and hunters may not use licenses issued by other states.
Hunters have the option to purchase an annual resident or non-resident Texas hunting license. The Annual Public Hunting Permit (also known as a Walk-In permit) provides hunters with nearly year-round hunting options for whitetail deer, dove, turkey, waterfowl and other wildlife. Annual licenses are valid from the date of purchase until Aug. 31 each year.
A Regular (Daily) Permit is also available for certain small game and waterfowl hunts. Regular permits are issued at the hunt area on a first-come first-served basis. Lifetime licenses and tags are available to Texas residents and are valid for the lifetime of the license holder.
Additionally, every Texas hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Proof of certification or deferral is required to be carried on your person while hunting, and this rule applies to everyone over the age of nine. The certification fee is $15.
Finding the Right Hunting Land
With such a vast amount of hunting land dotting the Lone Star State, it’s understandable why finding the perfect place to hunt may feel like a challenge for Texas hunters. But it doesn’t have to be daunting.
Information about public hunting spaces is readily available from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) website, including an interactive map of more than one million acres of accessible lands. These areas include hunting property owned by TPWD, acreage leased by the department from other state and federal agencies, forest products industries, and other cooperating private landowners. But, if you’re looking for a ranch that will offer you a world-class experience in one of Texas’ most pristine landscapes, you don’t have to look any further than Stone Creek Ranch to find it.
