What are Things First Time Adult Hunters Should Know?

At Stone Creek, we believe it’s beneficial for older kids and teens to learn how to hunt. However, not everyone is lucky enough to grow up in an environment where hunting skills are highly valued. If this describes you, you may be an adult now, and we’re here to let you know, It’s never too late to learn how to hunt! Here’s a few tips on how to get started:

Tip #1 You need a license

There are a lot of rules and regulations when it comes to hunting. Depending on where you hunt, you will need a license, and keep in mind, some areas require you to take and pass a hunter education course as well. It may also a good idea to learn about safe firearm handling, ethical shot placement, and an area’s rules/regulations before you actually begin hunting so you don’t run into any trouble. When you book a hunt at Stone Creek Ranch, we’ll help you with all of this!

Tip #2 Consider using a hunting guide

If you don’t want to go out alone for the first time, we don’t blame you!  Texas is world renowned for its impressive whitetail deer, and having a hunting guide with you can elevate your experience. In fact, here at Stone Creek, having a hunting guide tag along is one of the major reasons our guest’ say they love to hunt. Tip #3 You’ll want to pack the right clothes

Camouflage is not mandatory for hunting, but it’s definitely a good idea if you want to actually harvest an animal. Dressing in layers is also recommended, so you’re warm enough when it’s cold, but can strip off some clothing when the weather warms up later in the day. Don’t wear brand new boots; your feet will be screaming by the end of the hunt!

Tip #4 Get in some practice

You won’t be very successful if your first shot at a whitetail deer is the first time you’ve ever pulled the trigger. Before your first hunt, it’s a good idea to get some practice shooting. This way you’ll be familiar with your gun and ammo. You should be able to find a range that offers a class for beginners. You might also want to have taken a gun safety course, just to be on the safe side.
